Portrait and history of the EU

The EU is a union of 27 countries with a population of over 447 million. It arose from the efforts of European states to conclude treaties among themselves to ensure long-term peace and prosperity in Europe. The EU is not merely an economic arrangement. It is a union based on common values including respect for freedom, diversity and democracy.
